Original copy of common sense6/12/2023 Government, like dress, is the badge of lost innocence the palaces of kings are built upon the ruins of the bowers of paradise. Society in every state is a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil in its worst state an intolerable one: for when we suffer, or are exposed to the same miseries BY A GOVERNMENT, which we might expect in a country WITHOUT GOVERNMENT, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer. The first is a patron, the last a punisher. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. Society is produced by our wants, and government by our wickedness the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY by uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. SOME writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them whereas they are not only different, but have different origins. John l parker books6/12/2023 He is lithe and tall, with thick reddish hair and piercing blue eyes. It's easy to believe that Parker, now 60, was a record-setting runner in college. The anticipation surrounding the November release of its sequel, "Again to Carthage," in which the main character returns to Kernsville to recapture dreams of his youth, was heightened by the fact that Parker almost died before it hit the shelves. The cult-classic status of "Once a Runner" is secured by the fact that even tattered paperback copies of the book, now out of print, go for hundreds of dollars online. He had last returned to Gainesville to write "Once a Runner," his 1978 novel about a track and field star at the fictional Southeastern University in Kernsville, Fla., a book Runner's World magazine recently described as being "so inspiring that it could be banned as a performance-enhancing drug." Parker, a former University of Florida runner, started spending winters in the little house on his brother's property about four years ago after a quarter-century absence from Alachua County. has come home again, to a tiny bungalow that sits beneath curtains of Spanish moss and the shadows of the ghosts of his past. Sufenas Virius Lupus because I knew e comes to PantheaCon.”* It is important to keep the human element involved … We needed to meet.” Don wanted as many voices at the meeting as possible. He said,“On the Internet we argue with an argument not a person. Recognizing that “a number of people were feeling left out of the conversation,” Don asked the CoG/NWC/NROOGD suite to host a talk. The conversation then spilled over into other blog environments including Patheos’ Pointedly Pagan, Aedicula Antinoi: A Small Shrine of Antinous and Of Thespiae. Non-Wiccan practitioners took serious issue with the article’s language and assumptions. It all began three months earlier when The Interfaith Observer (TIO) published Don Frew’s article “The Rudiments of Neo Pagan Spiritual Practice.” A link to the article was posted here at The Wild Hunt after which an intense debate ensued. Lyrics Alley by Leila Aboulela6/12/2023 This was the first book I've read that had Sudan as its setting. The main problem was that this book only scratched the surface and ended up being a little underwhelming. The story is engaging, I established emotional connection with the characters, I got as indignant as usual over the opression of women and learnt a few exotic sounding words like 'hoash' and 'saraya'. This book is not brilliant but it's correct. I read Hundred Years of Solitude and got that under control and let me tell you there were about twelve generations, three hundred characters and all of them named Jose Arcadio and Aureliano. Who needs a tree? Please, I am a pro! I eat your tree for breakfast. 'Lyrics Alley' starts bizarrely with a family tree, even though there are only two generations on it - two brothers and their children. Don't you love those? Publishers sure do - there is a new one every two weeks. So this is another saga about a patriarchal family in exotic setting. Bookchin the ecology of freedom6/12/2023 The climate crisis put into question the technological transformations of our time. We looked at “ecology”, let’s now add the term “social”. Now it should be clearer what ecology can mean: how we understand the world around us. A series of words help us making sense of the world. In a similar fashion, we can think about “word” (logos) more as “reasoning” or “discourse”. The world is actually the home of humankind and other species. Let’s try by broadening the term “home” (oikos) and think about it more as “world”. Such enigmatic expression may need further unpacking. The word ecology is the combination of two ancient words: “home” (oikos) + “word” (logos) = “home’s word”. What do we mean by social ecology? And why is it important?įirst of all, let’s unpack in simple terms what ecology means. Stolen by lucy christopher book summary6/11/2023 We don’t know anything about the search for Gemma or what Gemma’s family and friends are going through. We do not get to see any of the outside world while Gemma is with Ty in the Outback. For most of Stolen, there are only two characters–Ty and Gemma. I understand Gemma’s Stockholm Syndrome because I feel it, too. Gemma’s feelings for Ty ring true because Lucy Christopher created such a compelling character in Ty. And I wasn’t even upset that Gemma loves Ty. She took me into the mind of Gemma, who resisted Ty as much as she could, but ultimately, she admits that she loves him in a way. She made me like him and worry about his welfare. She managed to make me feel sorry for a kidnapper who drugged a teenage girl. All the professional reviews I read recommend Grades 9-12, but it was in my MS/HS library and quite popular! WHAT I LIKED ABOUT STOLEN Be sure to read my notes for middle school librarians in the “Librarians Will Want to Know” section below. Well worth a read! I think adults would like this, too. Ty drugs Gemma’s coffee, kidnaps her from the airport, and takes her far from civilization to the Australian Outback. While waiting for a flight at Bangkok Airport, Gemma meets Ty, a handsome stranger who looks oddly familiar. Mccurry confederate reckoning6/10/2023 It seems hard to believe that a half-century has already passed since we observed the Civil War Centennial, which was a central event of my youth in Virginia. But even Wisconsin, a state distant from the field of battle, seeks to honor and to remember the 91,000 of its citizens who served in the war. Virginia, where so much of the military action took place, has launched an effort chaired by the speaker of the House of Delegates. States North and South have established sesquicentennial commissions, which are planning a wide range of observances. November 6 will mark the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s election December 20, the secession of South Carolina, the first Southern state to withdraw from the Union April 12, the firing on Fort Sumter July 21, the First Battle of Manassas, the first major engagement of the war.
